Top 5 Most Resonating Songs

by Friday, July 18, 2014

The reason I use the word ‘Resonate’ in the title of this post, as opposed to ‘Favorite’ or ‘Romantic’ or anything else, is because I didn’t want this to be a post about mush. The songs I wanted to list here are actual songs that resonated with my life at the time that I heard them, and till today, evoke an emotion in me that more often than not, I can’t explain.

Very silly, but I looked up the actual definition of the word ‘resonate’ and then decided that yes it was an apt title for the post because when something resonates with you, it evokes images, memories, and emotions.

So I was watching Love Aaj Kal today, and it prompted me to write this post.

Again, this is my personal list , and whilst I love everything from the music, the melody, the vocals and each and every word in these songs… I’ll try not to gush too much, and just talk about the best thing about each one of them. 🙂

To begin, I have an honorary mention to make:

Song – Suno Na from Jhankaar Beats. Singer – Shaan

I don’t want to classify this song as a part of my top 5 because for me it just kind of stands out as that one song that started it all for me.. the first song that went on repeat for the longest time and still takes me back to that time.

I was in my last year at Uni in Florida when I first heard it, and I remember driving around town with this on repeat on the car stereo. I never got over it and till today refer to it as my favorite of all time. Shaan remained my favorite singer for a long time only because of this one. And if I’m not wrong, he also got an award that year for this song.

Great, now that that’s out of my system, let’s get right into my Top 5. 😀

5. Yaariyaan – Cocktail.

Singers – K. Mohan & Shilpa Rao.

Letting go.

It can be one of the hardest things you’ll ever have to do in your life..

I heard this track when the movie released and loved it then… but it started meaning a lot more to me when I went through a ‘letting go’ period. As I said, it will probably be the hardest thing any of us will ever have to do in our lives.. but more often than not, it has to be done, to take us to better places in our journey.

This song really sums up what it is like to close a chapter with grace.. positive energy (to yourself and the other person).. and a smile (even if you have tears streaming down your face).. looking towards the future with hope.

Maan le tu aise.. Hai zara bhole se
Jaante hain waise.. Hai nibhaani kaise
Oh oh ho..
Na chhode yaariyan..

Don’t stop loving because this didn’t work out.

4. Tum Ho – Rockstar.

Singer – Mohit Chauhan

The movie itself blew me away. And this song, till today, makes me pause everything I’m doing and go into another time & place.

Kahin se.. kahin ko.. bhi
Aao bewajah chale
Poochhe bina kisi se.. Hum mile..
Bandishein naa rahi koi baaqi
Tum hoTum ho paas mere
Saath mere ho tum yun
Jitna mehsoos karooon tumko
Utna hi paa bhi loon

Kis tarah chheenega aa
Mujh se ye jahaan tumhe
Tum bhi ho main
Kya fiqar ab humein

Tum ho mere liye
Mere liye ho tum yun
Khud ko main haar gaya
Tum ko, Tumko main jeeta hoon..

3. Phir le aaya dil – Barfi.

Singer – Arijit Singh

It’s extremely rare in today’s times that a song like this even gets written or composed.. but a rare gem like this does come along unexpectedly and completely resonates with everything you’re feeling deep inside. It’s about the feeling of being torn inside, when there is an invisible thread connecting you to someone and you not being able to break away from it. The connection somehow brings you back together even though you try and do everything to stay away. I’m sure every one of us has felt it at some point in our lives.

Phir le aaya dil majboor kya keeje
Raas na aaya rehna door kya keeje
Dil keh raha use maqammal kar bhi aao
Wo jo adhoori si baat baaki hai
Wo jo adhoori si baat baaki hai

2. Khaabon ke parindey – Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.

Singers – Alyssa Mendonsa & Mohit Chauhan.

When it comes to ZNMD, I love everything. Because right from the time this film was announced, the actors who were being cast in it, the fact that it was going to be about a bunch of friends going on a road trip around Spain… I don’t think I’ve ever waited for any film to release as much as I did for this one… and it was absolutely worth it.

And while the movie was about each of the 3 friends rediscovering themselves through this journey… it was the moment just before this song begins in the film.. where Katrina and Hrithik feel the bond that has formed between them and yet part ways.. only to come back, share another beautiful moment, and she says – “mujhe afsos karna nahin aata..” THAT right there. The carpe diem moment. : ) Seizing the moment people!

Oh and the look in Hrithik’s eyes as he’s resting his head in the car day-dreaming. That ‘in-love’ look. That right there. Whether or not you feel it or have it on your face, it’s just beautiful to look at on anybody.

This is my go-to song whenever I’m feeling low or just need to believe again.

An “ab to… jo bhi ho so ho..” feeling takes over once I’m done listening to it. And I love that feeling.. makes me feel free and ready to give love again.

Roshni mili
Ab raah mein hai ik dilkashi si barsi
Har khusi mili..
Ab zindagi pe hai zindagi si barsi
Ab jeena hum ne seekha hai..

Yaad hai kal, aaya tha woh pal
Jisme jaadoo aisa tha..
Hum ho gaye jaise naye
Woh pal jaane kaisa tha..
Kahe yeh dil ke jaa udhar hi tu
Jahaan bhi leke jaaye aarzoo..
Oho, ab toh…
Jo bhi ho so ho
Jo bhi ho so ho

1. Yeh Dooriyaan – Love Aaj Kal.

Singer – Mohit Chauhan

This one right here. It has to be number one on my list. I can’t even pick the lines I like most in this song, because I love every single word.

This song released at a time in my life when I was forcing myself to be strong about something every single day. I was in a long distance relationship, and it would break my heart every time I said goodbye to the person at the airport. I would cry and be low for days. And this song somehow in some weird way would give me strength.

But whether or not you’re in a long distance relationship, or far away from the person you love, I think this song could mean a lot of things to you even if the person you love is right next to you and around you every single day.

Dooriyaan’ being metaphorical. You could be miles apart physically, yet deeply connected inside. And you could be right next to each other, but feel really far away from the person on the inside. Both can be heart breaking.

Kabhi hua yeh bhi.. Khaali raahon pe bhi..
Tu tha mere saath..

Kabhi tujhe milke lautaa mera dil yeh khaali khaali haath..
Yeh bhi hua kabhi.. Jaise hua abhi
Tujhko sabhi mein paa liya.

Tera mujhe kar jaati hai dooriyan..
Sataati hain dooriyan..
Tarsaati hain dooriyan..
Fanaa ho sabhi dooriyan.

Until next time – keep loving, and keep Being Awesome : )

I’m in love with yeh dooriyan, some how when I was going through a bad phase in my relationship, as soon as I heard it, I had tears in my eyes.
Samjhawan, zehnaseen, chaandaniya, mann mast magan, badra bahar, harjaaiyan and galliyan are some other songs that I think are beautiful! 🙂
Sorry for flooding your comments section…

There are a few – Ik tu hi tu hi by Wadali Brothers; Kabira & Elahi; Shikayatein from Lootera…it would be a toss up between Elahi & Shikayatein for me for sure…to think about it some really nice songs have come by in the last few years…:)

Oooooh you hit the right spot. I’ve shared Ilahi in a previous post so didn’t want to repeat it but it’s another one my “soul” songs:) and omg.. ik tu hi tu is one that most people don’t even remember but again, a rare gem in today’s times. Love it.
And shikayatein….Thank you! That definitely ties with yaariyaan for no 5 in my list. Looteron ko baghban banaayein….naseebon ki baat hai… Sigh.
      Thanks Kunal:)

Our elders always complain about songs being pathetic these days…no doubt they had great music…but we have a few classics here for sure…:)
